What is Reverse Logistics?

The process of a product effectively travelling “backwards” in contrast to conventional supply chain activities is known as reverse logistics. It moves a product from a customer back to the seller or manufacturer to be arranged and restocked, driven by the returns market. These products may also be returned to be recycled, repaired, resold, or donated.

Process

  • A customer makes the decision to return a goods to the merchant. This can be due to a defect, incorrect sizing, damage, or a customer’s distaste of the product.
  • The customer will then either return the item using a returns label or drop it off at a nearby store.
  • The goods is subsequently sent to the warehouse facilities, where quality inspections are performed to determine whether the product is marketable and suitable for restocking. If not, the item will be recycled or given a second life.
  • The buyer can then receive a refund.

Principal Motivators of Reverse Logistics

Returns Management and Returns Policies (RPP):

If you have a solid management system and returns policy in place, customers are more inclined to make another purchase from your company. By offering a seamless returns procedure, you can manage frequent customer returns, improve the perception of your brand and customer loyalty, find possibilities to lower undesired returns, and manage reusable assets.

Remanufacturing or Refurbishment (ROR)-

You can save money and reduce needless waste by having your products refurbished. Products can be resold and distributed, boosting your company’s profits.

Delivery Failure-

Products that have an unsuccessful delivery need to be returned and stored back in fulfilment warehouses. Reverse logistics allows this to happen under all one system.

End of Life/ Waste disposal (WAD)-

Giving customers the ability to return products that have expired allows the products to be disposed of in the most environmentally friendly way.

What benefits does reverse logistics offer?

Cost-cutting while adding value-

You can reduce the costs associated with the transportation and storage of your products when they need to be returned by using Reverse Logistics. This allows you to retain the value of your business and continue a stream of income by repurposing goods that are sent back through the supply chain. Using an efficient reverse logistics process will save you money on administration, repairs, quality insurance and disposal costs.

Improve customer service/retention–

In today’s competitive market and with the rise of e-commerce fulfilment, it is important to implement a correct returns management process that can reduce wait times and deliver a quick resolution for customers. A negative returns system could heavily impact the likelihood of a customer purchasing from your business again. Therefore implementing a robust system and clear returns policy is vital in maintaining a good relationship with your customers and increasing loyalty.

Allow for more enduring initiatives

Implementing a way that customers can give their products which are no longer fit for use back, ensures that products can be disposed of in the most eco-friendly and sustainable way. By using more sustainable efforts you are giving your business the ability to attract more customers. Showing that you are committed to environmental issues by recycling and reusing parts of your products entices customers to purchase from your business as more and more customers are looking for actively green businesses to purchase from.

Conclusion

As vital as the revenues your company is generating are, dealing with clients to earn and maintain their loyalty is equally crucial. In today’s cutthroat market, ignoring returns management is insufficient and could lose your company the opportunity to increase sales and satisfy customers. As the amount of e-commerce fulfilment increases, putting Reverse Logistics and the customer experience first enables you to go above and beyond consumer expectations and increase customer happiness and loyalty. Accept returns and use them as a chance to enhance your product lineup and keep customers happy.
